Job Title: IP/Optical Architect

Location: The Netherlands (Hybrid or On-site)

Job Type: Permanent

Industry: Telecommunications / Network Infrastructure

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced IP/Optical Architect to join our Core Network Architecture team, with a focus on defining and evolving the target architecture for our Core and Peering networks. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in optical transport technologies (WDM, OTN), along with a strong understanding of IP/MPLS and multi-layer convergence strategies.

This role is critical in shaping the future of our network infrastructure, ensuring scalability, performance, and seamless integration between optical and packet domains.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and maintain the target architecture for the core transport and peering networks, with emphasis on WDM/OTN, IP/MPLS, and layer 0-3 convergence.

  • Lead the development of multi-layer network design principles, ensuring synergy between optical and IP layers.

  • Evaluate and select optical transport solutions and vendors, ensuring alignment with architectural strategy and technology roadmap.

  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to guide network evolution plans, capacity management, and modernization initiatives.

  • Conduct impact assessments for new services and technologies on the existing transport network.

  • Support technology trials, proofs-of-concept, and the transition of innovations into production.

  • Serve as the domain expert for optical-IP integration, advising cross-functional teams on best practices and design standards.

  • Participate in standards development, industry forums, and vendor engagements.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in telecommunications networking, with a minimum of 5 years in optical network architecture or design roles.

  • Deep knowledge of WDM (DWDM/ROADM) and OTN (G.709) technologies, including optical layer planning and design.

  • Strong understanding of IP/MPLS protocols, routing architectures, and peering models, particularly in large-scale service provider environments.

  • Demonstrated experience with multi-layer network convergence, including control plane integration and operational strategies.

  • Hands-on experience with equipment from vendors such as Infinera, Ciena, Nokia (optical), Huawei (optical), or similar.

  • Experience with network planning and modeling tools for optical and IP layers.

  • Strong analytical and documentation skills, with ability to convey complex technical concepts to stakeholders.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with automation and SDN concepts in optical or transport domains.

  • Familiarity with NetConf/YANG, REST APIs for network programmability.

  • Participation in standards bodies (e.g., ITU-T, IETF, MEF) is a plus.

  • Dutch language proficiency is a plus, but not mandatory.

What We Offer:

  • Opportunity to shape the future of a mission-critical national and international network.

  • Work with cutting-edge technologies and industry-leading vendors.

  • Competitive salary and benefits.

  • Flexible working environment with a mix of remote and on-site presence.

  • Collaborative and technically strong team culture.

How to Apply:

If you're an architect with a passion for optical transport and IP integration, and you're ready to take on a strategic role in a dynamic and evolving network landscape, we’d love to hear from you. Please submit your CV and a brief cover letter detailing your relevant experience.
